We are a community radio station broadcasting to the world from Brighton & Hove in good old Sussex-by-the-Sea. We live for our music, we love our city and we want the people of Brighton & Hove to have a radio station they can be proud of. We have been broadcasting online since April 2015 and have successfully applied to Ofcom for a community licence that will enable us to broadcast on the FM frequency to Sussex. Until then, we’re accessible via the internet, the TuneIn app and DAB.
We live in a city with a rich musical heritage. In the past 20 years Brighton & Hove has given the world Fatboy Slim, Royal Blood, Bat For Lashes, The Kooks, Rizzle Kicks, Fujiya & Miyagi; notable acts such as Steve Mason, Gaz Coombes, Nick Cave and David Gilmour of Pink Floyd call it home. Abba won Eurovision here. The mods and rockers fought on our streets and beaches on 1960s bank holidays and were immortalised in The Who’s Quadrophenia. Loads of independent record labels, such as Tru Thoughts and Skint, are based here and there are more than 40 shops selling records in the town; each spring the city hosts The Great Escape and the Brighton Music Conference. Our Pride event is one of the largest in the UK. Hundreds of new bands get their first break here in the (literally hundreds of) pubs and bars that host live music and DJs.
However, despite a global reputation for musical brilliance there is surprisingly little representation of underground music in Brighton & Hove. 1 Brighton focuses on showcasing cutting edge and eclectic music mirroring the diverse styles that our city’s reputation is built on. To list all the genres played on the station would mean a lot of scrolling down. However, it can be summarised easily: we play the best music we can, all of the time.
Our DJ roster is up there with the best you’ll find on any station anywhere: Internationally successful DJs working in tandem with up and coming local talent. Plus, as a city that attracts high calibre acts we are able to host regular guests too. In addition to their shows our DJs are record collectors, writers, artists, musicians, record label bosses, shopkeepers, publicans and musical connoisseurs; and each of them have their roots here on the sunny south coast of England and ply their trade locally. On any given weekend you could find 50 of our DJs playing in town or beyond.
We currently host shows from over 100 local DJs, musicians and community groups. We are a commercial-free not-for-profit station. There are no playlists: DJs are free to play the music they want to play.
We support local community groups, students and university courses by providing studio time, airtime, support and training at out studios in the heart of Hove. We are working closely with including Audio Active, University Radio Falmer, Kiss My Disco and The Clock Tower Sanctuary offering internships to students at Brighton & Hove City College, giving students airtime to practice their skills and hosting fundraising events.
We cherish the diversity and creativity of our community.
We hope you enjoy what you hear.
