Focus On Mickey Duke

DJ name
Mickey Duke

Birthplace
The Mighty, Wolverhampton

Age (if you’re brave enough)
Frumfrin

Show
The Friday Feelgood show

When did your show start
3rd Apr 2015, the day of our launch.

THE GOOD

Most memorable gig
Too many to mention but small and intimate – Peter Green at Ronnie Scott’s, Birmingham, can’t remember the year, maybe late 90’s.  Big gig – Verve at Haigh Hall or Weller somewhere, sometime.

Best club played
Rico’s, Wolverhampton. Of course, I’m being biased as it was my first foray into promoting but it was damn good for a year or so.

Previous radio stations
Radio 4A / Code South.

Favourite club crowd played to
Medicine Bar, Birmingham.

Favourite song since April 2015
Jeeez! I’ve bought 100’s brilliant records since then. I’ll say, ‘A.K Paul – Landcruisin’ as it’s been my fave of the last few months.

Favourite album since April 2015
Oh, come on! Again, because it’s recent, BADBADNOTGOOD – IV.

Favourite label of 2016
None of these answers are decisive – Athens Of The North.

Best live act seen in Brighton and where/when
The Bees – Concorde 2 (2006/7)

Biggest influence on your DJing, and why
Gilles Peterson – Cos I owe half of my record collection to him. Been listening most weeks for 20 odd years and I don’t ever get tired.

Favourite pub in Brighton
The Black Dove

Favourite other DJ (non1BFM)
Theo Parrish

Favourite club visited
Madisons (Bournemouth), Hacienda (Manchester), Plastic People (London)

THE BAD

Least favourite genre
Euro Trance, makes my skin bleed.

Name a record you regret playing
I’d like to say ‘Bobby McFerrin – ‘Don’t worry be happy’ at someone’s wake but that didn’t happen. I don’t remember regretting playing a record.  I remember regretting turning up at all a few times.

Worst gig, and why
As a punter I would say either, Primal Scream at the Civic in Wolves, smashed out of their heads and incoherent; to level that out, I’ve seen them loads and they are up there with some of the best gigs I’ve been to. The other would be – and I hate to seem like I’m jumping on a bandwagon – Shuggie Otis, Concorde 2. I saw him 6 months prior to that at The Jazz Café, one of the first gigs out of his retirement. He was bad then and I put it down to nerves and a lack of action, hoping for a better show in Brighton. Nope. I’m such a fan too, shame. The quality of his records doesn’t translate to the stage.

Name one thing you don’t like about DJing
A terrible soundsystem. No excuse: No sound, no point.

Can I have a t-shirt now?

Share the love!
