Shows
Daddy Marcus, The Nitty Gritty
When did your show start
April 2015. The Nitty Gritty was live on the station’s launch day and my first Daddy Marcus show was the following day. It was a very exciting weekend!
THE GOOD
Most memorable gig
Supporting Gilles Peterson at The Ocean Rooms sometime around 2005 or 2006 with Ali Back from Go Bang. It was a tremendous vibe and was just one of those nights when every single tune clicked with the crowd.
Best club played
The Aeronaut in Acton, I play there once a month and the punters and staff are amazing. None of them stop dancing all night.
Previous radio stations
I’ve done a few guest spots on Reverb, but that’s it really.
Favourite club crowd played to
Apart from the Aeronaut? I spent seven years playing on payday Saturdays at The Fishbowl (now the East Street Tap) in Brighton. A lot of the DJs from there are on 1 Brighton now. I think that Bacchanalian would be the best description for that crowd – they would be very messy, but very appreciative.
Favourite song since April 2015
Margarida – Fatnotronic (Record Store Day release).
Favourite album since April 2015
Changes – Charles Bradley
Favourite label of 2016
BBE. They have released some quality compilations and I love the variety of their releases.
Best live act seen in Brighton and where/when
Etta James at The Zap Club about 1989/1990.
Biggest influence on your DJing and why
David Holmes, Fred Deakin and Andy Smith for their eclecticism and for helping me to understand that there was an audience for DJs playing something other than 4/4 dance music at a time when that was seemingly the prevalent music everywhere I went.
Favourite pub in Brighton
The Farm Tavern.
Favourite other DJ (non1BFM)
DJ Krush, Daddy G, Justin Robertson (sorry, I couldn’t narrow it down to just one).
Favourite club visited
I used to love hanging out at The WAG in Wardour Street and The Mud Club at Busbys on London’s Charing Cross Road when I was a fresh-faced teen in the capital.
THE BAD
Least favourite genre
psy-trance (is that how you spell it?)
Name a record that you regret playing
Je ne regrette rien!!
Worst gig, and why
Hahahaha, far too many to mention. One that stands out was playing at a bar in the Sussex countryside that was full of teenagers who just wanted to hear David Guetta ‘tunes’. Suffice to say that I didn’t go over that well with them and they were extremely vocal about it.
Name one thing you don’t like about DJing
Punters who ask for a request without saying please.
Will this do?
