Howler's Balearic Breakdown Breakfast Show

8am to 10am

First and third Thursday of the month

Hola, I’m Howler to my friends, or Chris if you want to keep it formal, and I’ve been playing music on this wonderful station since July 2021.

Raised in Oxford, and now a 20-year resident in London, Brighton has always held a special place in my heart. In fact, it’s where I cut my clubbing teeth when, as a wide-eyed 16-year old, I was dragged along to the legendary Jazz Rooms in 1988, which in turn led to nights at the Zap a short while later.

Musically, I’ve always been an avid collector with eclectic tastes and so, for me, the term/genre ‘Balearic’ really enables me to play whatever the hell I want to be honest, because it’s a feeling, or something. My earliest influences were Blondie, The Velvet Underground, and the fledgling electronic scene of the early 1980s, along with The Who, ska/blue beat and soul – see what I mean?
Really, it just boils down to the fact that I’ve always loved trying to introduce folk to amazing music, be that brand-new bits, or older less well-known songs, so when I was asked to host a show on 1BTN, I jumped at the opportunity.

You can usually catch me spinning at festivals such as We Out Here, Wildwood Disco, and Alfresco, various clubs around the country, plus I still make the occasional jaunt over to Ibiza to play at venues such as Pikes and Word of Mouth.

As for the show, expect a chilled start (given the time of day), then a gentle increase in velocity over the next two hours – taking in downtempo, cosmic, new beat, dub, wrong speeders, curve balls, slipped disco, acid house and wonky edits.

Come on in, the water’s lovely.
