LYNNÉE DENISE – SOULFUL MUSIC OF THE BLACK ATLANTIC

Listen back to the first instalment of Sonic Sunday School – Soulful Music of the Black Atlantic from the majestic Lynnée Denise, who has joined the 1BTN ranks for a monthly residency.

Having been raised in Cali, Lynneée now lives in London and spends time in Amsterdam. Lynnée was shaped as a DJ by her parent’s record collection and the sounds of Los Angeles underground radio. She’s an artist, scholar, and writer whose work reflects on underground cultural movements, the 1980s, migration studies, theories of escape, and electronic music of the African Diaspora. Lynnée Denise coined the phrase ‘DJ Scholarship’ to re-position the role of the DJ from a party purveyor to an archivist, cultural custodian and information specialist of music with critical value.

Lynnée’s show explores the world of cosmic jazz, dub, dancehall, roots reggae, funky gospel, and electronic music. Lynnée says “I started digging through the crates in the 1990s and presented my findings on college radio (WFSK). Ever since then, I’ve been chasing samples, reading liner notes, studying album cover art, and mixtaping my way through this earthly plane. The music, however, is otherworldly and outernational. Stay tuned and stand by”
