International Women’s Day

1BTN are delighted to announce our annual all-day female takeover for International Women’s Day 2021 (IWD21) on Monday 8 March.

Running from midnight on Monday 8 March to 3am on Tuesday 9 March, the 1BTN International Women’s Day Takeover has become a key fixture in the station’s calendar since its debut in 2018. This year’s takeover will feature the largest line-up with 27 of the station’s female presenters across the 27 hours of programming, playing femme-focused music spanning the genres, to enlighten your ears and feed your soul! This year, 1BTN will be raising money throughout IWD for Brighton-based charity RISE.

For its biggest event yet, the 1BTN airwaves will be filled with a wide range of genres as the station celebrates women’s achievements in music, highlighting the songwriters, producers, writers, performers, remixers, artists and musicians who have enhanced their lives. Expect Afro beat, breaks, dancehall, disco, dub, electro, funk, grime, hip hop, house, indie, jazz, jungle, Latino, new wave, psych, punk, pop, R’n’B, reggae, rock, ska, soul, synth, and techno.

Taking part in IWD21 (in alphabetical order) are A Joyful Noise with Rosie Turton, Atlantic Waves The Witching Hour, Chicha Morada with Louise Wilde, Club Click with Catherine, Daisha, Ellie, Feel Up with Kerry Jean Lister, Funk The Format with Lucy ‘Elle J’ Small, INTER-MISSION with Clara Suess, I-SHA, Jamie, Anya Lux, Our House with Sophie Paul, Playtime with Kitty, Molly Pop, Renata, Riddims with Priya, Sista Selecta’s I Am Fya and Yes Mel, Sisters of Soul with Charli Umami, Jennifer Touch, Penelope Trappes, Underlying Oddities with Martha Cleary, Unhooked Generation with Anna Barnfield, Wildblood & Queenie, Jayne Winstanley, Women of the World with Radio Peacock.

The IWD21 campaign theme #ChooseToChallenge will be at the heart of the day. We can all choose to challenge and call out gender bias and inequality. We can all choose to seek out and celebrate women’s achievements. Collectively, we can all help create an inclusive world.

Suze Rosser from 1BTN said: “I’m really pleased and excited that we are able to put on more than a full day of amazing shows that represent IWD. We have 27 shows airing on March 8 which is simply amazing! When we started the takeover in 2018, we had 12 shows which is still great, but to see it grow over the last few years makes me very proud to be a part of the day. There is a wealth of music from across all genres, it’s going to be a fantastic day!”

This year, 1BTN International Women’s Day Takeover will be fundraising for RISE. RISE is a Brighton based domestic violence and abuse charity that has worked for 26 years to end all forms of violence and abuse against women, their families and those identifying as LGBTQ+. RISE stands for Refuge, Information, Support and Education; our strategic mission is freedom from abuse and violence. RISE reaches across East Sussex and Brighton & Hove, providing wrap-around services for adults and children on their recovery journey, following experiences of domestic abuse. Our essential services include specialist one-to-one therapy, therapeutic survivor groups, an LGBTQ+ refuge, work with children and families, as well as community engagement projects.
